About the Club
PONTYPOOL SKATER HOCKEY CLUB is based at Pontypool Leisure Centre, and has teams in all junior age groups.
The club is currently training at Fairwater Leisure Centre due to extensive refurbishment of Pontypool Leisure Centre. With teams in all junior age groups the club is one of the largest in the UK with over forty active players. Plans are being made for a new senior team for the 2006 - 2007 season to coincide with the clubs return to Pontypool Leisure Centre. Due to re-open in October 2006, over £7 million will be spent on the Centre and when complete it will be 75% brand new
The clubs is managed by a committee elected each year at its Annual General Meeting and is now affiliated to the British Inline Puck Hockey Association. It has teams in the following age groups: Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18, . To play within an age group, a player must be under the age limit on the 1st January of the year the season starts. The club is run by voluntary coaches and officials and training is provided by the English Ice Hockey Association.
The Cost of Membership - The British Inline Puck Hockey Association Registration Fee: This fee is around £20. This allows the player to take part in competitive games and provides a level of insurance cover (But does not include weekly benefits).
Training - Players receive one hour training per week which takes place on Wednesday evening at various times between 6.30pm and 9.30pm at Fairwater Leisure Centre.
Club Monthly Fee: - this is currently £11 per month but may change if the amount of children training reduces, or the Club's overheads increase throughout the year. It covers the cost of hiring the hall at Pontypool Leisure Centre for training. This sum must be paid to the Treasurer by standing order on the first Wednesday of every month.
Matches - The playing season for league matches starts in September and is completed the following April. This is followed throughout the rest of the summer until June by tournaments and play-offs for the British Championships. Games are played at neutral venues on weekends. Match Fees of £2.50 are paid for league games this is to cover the amount charged by local leagues and covers the cost of hiring the facilities.
Team Shirts - Players buy their own shirt at a rate subsidised by the club dependent on any sponsorship received.
Hockey Kit Required - In order to take part in training sessions and games players must wear a full set of hockey kit, only kit specifically manufactured for Ice Hockey is allowed. Helmets must carry the North American or Swedish safety certificate sticker. Each player (Male and female) must have the following items:- Helmet (with face guard), Body armour, Gloves, Neck guard, Abdominal protector (Box), Leg guards, Padded Shorts, Elbow pads, Skates, Stick (plus spare if possible), Training shirt, Socks or trousers, Sweat suit to wear under the kit. There is a large amount of second hand kit available from other club members which is usually in good condition.
Skating Ability - Before a player can play in one of the clubs teams we require that they must attain a reasonable skill level.
League Structures - Pontypool’s teams currently play approximately twelve games in the British Inline Puck Hockey Association (South East Wales). If we are successful in those leagues we also play in the British Team Championships. Friendly games and tournaments are also played where ever possible.
